Antenna Fern

Doryopteris caudata

("dorry-OP-ter-iss cor-DAH-ta")

The Antenna Fern is an unusual looking fern that has two different shaped fronds. Also known as Doryopteris caudata or Doryopteris cordata.

The sterile fronds at the base of the plant are broad, flat and lobed in shape and form a mound on the ground. When mature, feathery fertile fronds will grow from long stalks and these carry the spore cases (sori) high above the plant - resembling TV aerials (hence the name Antenna fern). All our potted plants come in compostable coir pots - read more here.

Country of Origin

Habitat Conditions

Like all ferns, it requires moist soil and quite humid conditions and it would be ideal for bathrooms or terrariums.

Plant Care

Medium - avoid direct sunlight

Keep the soil moist, but not wet. Regular misting with tepid water is also beneficial

Do not prune. Dead or dying fronds can be cut back to the base

A weak solution of fertilizer can be added to the water every time you water the plant

Pest & Diseases

Generally pest free, but keep a lookout for mealybugs and two-spotted spider mite. Mealybugs can be physically removed by cleaning. If you spot the webbing of spider mites, it is likely that the plant is being kept in too dry an atmosphere.
